India finished day one of the first Test at Green Park in Kanpur at 291 for 9. Here are some interesting numbers from the first day’s play.

India collapsed from 154 for 1 to 291 for 9 at the end of the opening day’s play. In effect, they lost 8 wickets for 137 runs starting from the loss of the second wicket.

India were 105 for 1 at lunch. They then collapsed rather inexplicably. The hosts lost 80 for 3 in the second session, and 106 for 5 in the final session.

Murali Vijay made his maiden fifty against New Zealand. Before his 65 on the opening day, he had managed only 48 runs in four innings against them.

As many as five India batsmen crossed the 30 mark in the match, but not one managed to reach even 70. Vijay top-scored with 65. Cheteshwar Pujara made 62, Ravichandran Ashwin 40, Rohit Sharma 32 and Lokesh Rahul 32.

Pujara and Vijay added 112 for the second wicket. This is their fourth century stand in Tests. They have also been involved in 13 fifty-wicket partnerships and, as a pair, average an impressive 60 plus.

Trent Boult’s 3 for 57 are his best Test figures in India as of now. He claimed the three wickets in the last five overs of his spell, dismissing Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammed Shami.

Virat Kohli does not seem to enjoy batting against Neil Wagner. The fast bowler has dismissed the Indian Test captain thrice in the space of 77 deliveries.

Between the fall of Rohit and Shami’s, India lost four wickets for 16 runs. Rohit was the sixth wicket to fall at 261, Saha went next at 262, Ashwin and 273 and Shami at 277.

Among the Indian batsmen who crossed 30, Lokesh Rahul had the best strike rate. He scored 32 from 39 at a strike rate of 82.5.

Only two sixes were hit in the entire day’s play – one by Rahul and the other by Rohit.

Each of the New Zealand bowlers who was given a bowl finished with at least one wicket. Boult claimed 3 for 57, Mitchell Santner 3 for 77 while Wagner, Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi picked up one wicket each.
