On a rain-affected second day’s play, Australia took the match forward by declaring its first innings at 450 for 5 and then reducing the tourists to 87 for 4. The Lankans now have their backs to the walls having lost three of its experienced players – Sangakkara, Skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Samaraweera in a little over 29 overs before stumps. Dilshan who has scored an unbeaten 50 along with Vice-Captain Angelo Mathews has survived the torrid session.
Earlier, the Aussies were pegged back by a rain break in the morning session. The hosts lost Michael Clarke (74) to Shaminda Eranga once play resumed at the Bellerive Oval. Michael Hussey with 118* (from 184 balls with 8 fours and a six) alongside Wicket Keeper Matthew Wade (68* from 135 balls with 5 fours) took the Aussies to 450 for 5 in 131 overs before Clarke declared the innings before Tea.
